Direct Evidence for Outflow of Metal-enriched Gas along the Radio Jets of Hydra A
نویسندگان
چکیده
Using deep Chandra observations of the Hydra A galaxy cluster, we examine the metallicity structure near the central galaxy and along its powerful radio source. We show that the metallicity of the intracluster medium is enhanced by up to 0.2 dex along the radio jets and lobes compared to the metallicity of the undisturbed gas. The enhancements extend from a radius of 20 kpc from the central galaxy to a distance of ∼ 120 kpc. We estimate the total iron mass that has been transported out of the central galaxy to be between 2×10 M⊙ and 7×10 7 M⊙ which represents 10% 20% of the iron mass within the central galaxy. The energy required to lift this gas is roughly 1% to 5% of the total energetic output of the AGN. Evidently, Hydra A’s powerful radio source is able to redistribute metal-enriched, low entropy gas throughout the core of the galaxy cluster. The short re-enrichment timescale < 10 yr implies that the metals lost from the central galaxy will be quickly replenished. Jet-driven outflows of ionized gas in the nearby radio galaxy 3C 293
Fast outflows of gas, driven by the interaction between the radio jets and interstellar medium (ISM) of the host galaxy, are being observed in an increasing number of galaxies. One such example is the nearby radio galaxy 3C 293. In this paper we present integral field unit observations taken with OASIS on the William Herschel Telescope, enabling us to map the spatial extent of the ionized gas o...
متن کاملAGN feedback by relativistic jets
Feedback provided by relativistic jets may be effective in shaping the galaxy luminosity function. The quenching mode (quasar mode) at redshifts ∼2-3 potentially disperses gas in star-forming galaxies. The maintenance mode (radio mode) heats the gas in galaxy clusters counteracting cooling flows. A number of authors have examined the effect of relativistic jets in dispersing clouds in the kpc-s...
متن کاملA jet - induced outflow of warm gas in 3 C 293
Using long slit emission-line spectra we detect a fast outflow of ionized gas, with velocities up to 1000 km s −1 , in the nearby powerful radio galaxy 3C 293 (z = 0.045). The fast outflow is located about 1 kpc east of the nucleus, in a region of enhanced radio emission due to the presence of a distorted radio jet. We present results that indicate that this fast outflow is caused by a jet-ISM ...
متن کاملX-ray Supercavities in the Hydra a Cluster and the Outburst History of the Central Galaxy’s Active Nucleus
A 227 ksec Chandra Observatory X-ray image of the hot plasma in the Hydra A cluster has revealed an extensive cavity system. The system was created by a continuous outflow or a series of bursts from the nucleus of the central galaxy over the past 200 − 500 Myr. The cavities have displaced 10% of the plasma within a 300 kpc radius of the central galaxy, creating a swiss-cheese-like topology in t...

We show that the starburst-driven outflow in the peculiar galaxy NGC 2782 forms a well-defined collimated bubble which has an extent of ∼ 1 kpc and a closed shell at its edge, as seen in Hα, [O III], and 5 GHz radio continuum. The shell coincides with the maximum in intensity and linewidths of [O III] lines in a blueshifted emission nebula which was previously detected via optical spectroscopy ...
